We have won a glorious though dear-bought victory. Night closed on the enemy in full flight and closely pursued.

Was President Davis misinformed; or was this merely a case of wishful thinking? The lack of pursuit of the withdrawing Federals (and possibility of capture of Southern-sympathizing Washington) led to a rift between Davis and his most successful General (PGT Beauregard) that never healed.
