Potomac Crossing Event 2010

16 08 2010

To honor the 148th Anniversary of the Battle of Shepherdstown, the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association (SBPA) has scheduled a Battlefield Tour including a wading of the Potomac River. The tour is set, rain or shine, for Saturday, September 18, 2010.

Dr. Tom Clemens and Tom McGrath will be the guides. Two tours are scheduled; one to begin at 2:30PM followed by another at 3:30PM. Each tour will last about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

After each tour, the participants will hike to 132 Trough Bend Lane to enjoy a barbecue, beer, wine and soft drinks. We ask for a donation of $30 per person.

TO MAKE A RESERVATION, VISIT THE FOLLOWING LINK:

That’s really a feets-on deal. How deep is it there?

The crossing is via the same ford used by Uion 5th Corps troops during the pursuit of Lee’s army and the battle at Shepherdstown. Last year the water was about knee deep, but I think we missed the actual ford by a few yards.

Well worth doing for anyone interested. I was a part of last years crossing and I have to say, it was a unique event that I wont soon forget. If you go, bring a walking stick or two……..things can get a bit slippery out there, but that view from mid-river is spectacular.

I wish I could participate in this. However, I won’t be far, the South Mountain State Battlefield where I work will be helping with the dedication of the Newcomer House on the 18th and Antietam National Battlefield on the 19th. I hope the Shepherdstown event is a success. Is this a yearly tour?

John,

This is the third year that SBPA has held this event. I’ll add a link to my article on last year’s crossing now.
