Friend Terry Johnston sent me a copy of his book, “Him on the One Side and Me on the Other”: The Civil War Letters of Alexander Campbell, 79th New York Infantry Regiment, and James Campbell, 1st South Carolina Battalion. I was going to buy it online, but dropped Terry a note just in case he had any for sale himself, since the book is only available on the secondary market. Terry was kind enough to send me a complimentary, inscribed copy. Considering that the book is selling for between $45 and $90, that was one heck of a gesture on his part. The book includes two letters written by Alexander recounting his experience at Bull Run, and I’ll be posting those in the future. Thanks Terry!

I read it a few years ago, and it’s one of the better books based on soldiers letters from the Civil War. It is also very well edited and a very interesting read.
