Surprised this didn’t mention Ames was an 1861 graduate of West Point. Likely most everyone already knows Ames went on to serve as the 20th Maine’s first Colonel, but did everyone know that he married Benjamin Butler’s daughter, Blanche, after the war?

Or that he was George Plimpton’s great-grandfather? Or that Plimpton’s grandmother nagged JFK to amend his account of Ames in “Profiles in Courage?” Or that Ames was in Northfield, MN on the day of the James/Younger gang raid on his father-in-law’s bank? Or that Ames played golf frequently with Henry Ford? Admittedly, that’s a lot of stuff to put on a citation…
