I’ve long been an admire of Wert’s books and have all of them in my collection (except the latest). I really like the subjects he has covered and he always does justice to them.

I wish his publishers would have let him do his proposed biography of George Meade a few years ago as that would have helped fill a gap in Civil War history -as Cleaves remains the only work on Meade.

One of my favorite writers, I always look forward to picking up another work from Mr. Wert. May he enjoy the well deserved break from the grind.

I think Wert’s impressive use of primary sources is his major strength. I find his writing style, especially in “The Sword of Lincoln,” to be a bit turgid and florid for my taste. My opinion of Glenn Lafantasie’s work, such as his bio of William C. Oates, is much the same. I prefer the even, unadorned prose of a McPherson or Rhea. But of course, there’s no accounting for taste.
