Brett,

United Service (sometimes called United States Service) was a magazine modeled after the same named British periodical from early in the 19th century - I think there was also one published in India. Along the lines of the Army and Navy Journal or Gazette. These were publications for professional soldiers. The professional journals are sources that have not been extensively used over the years by historians of the Civil War. Hopefully more will be digitized, along with Union veteran publicaitons like the National Tribune. Then maybe we won't be reading the same tired quotes over and over (though I think you'll recognize some of the bits in this article, like the Sykes "rout" quote).

I don't think I've ever heard of United Service. How did you come across this one?
