Have visited the Lincoln Museum twice now and am quite prepared to give it another go.

Lincoln did have an office in the Old State Capitol after the election. IIRC it was on the main floor, SE corner.or else the east room next to the corner.

By all means you must see New Salem, but go in the summer and check ahead as the state is known to cut the budget abruptly and guess which sites suffer?

Also, avoid Springfield during the state fair as there are no rooms to be had.

I agree, its not the sort of museum I'm used to. But while I was there it seemed to do a good job pulling in the younger set, plus I enjoyed myself as well. So if it gets more people interested in Lincoln and the war that's a good thing.

Thanks for the post. I have only read about the museum in 'Land of Lincoln' but would like to see it in person someday. It's interesting that according to the book that they were going to go further like having Lincoln's casket be open which would have been historically correct and some other interesting things the designer mentions in the chapter which were not accepted. I guess if it gets children interested in this part of American history and they crack open good books the Lincoln museum is a good thing.
