When we visited the Lincoln home in September, the guide told us that was in fact Mary's commode (we didn't ask—he volunteered that info). I'm always fascintated by the possessions that survive. Not something I would have thought to pass down through the generations!

Great post and wonderful pictures. I will have to add them to my collection on the computer. I was hoping that your impression would be a good one for the Lincoln home. It is really one of Illinois real treasures and very much worth the time spent viewing the house. Not to mention the cost for the ticket...$0.00!

Looking forward to your remaining posts...

Harry I first visited the Lincoln home in 1954. It had just been restored and was not yet part of the National Park nor was the neighborhood restored. The two things I remember from that time was the horsehair furniture in the Parlor and the privy out back with the barrel type seats. The guide at the time told us it was to enable women with hoop skirts to use them.

I was back there a year ago with Muster group from Shotgun's website. I was surprised at how it had changed but was still the same. I really liked the way they have restored the neighborhood.
Thanks for sharing all the photos.
