I can't find anything in Krick that says Hunton ever had a staff officer whose name started with "C", though I think the book only lists general staff, not regimental. Maybe the 8th VA regimental sheds some light. That's one I don't have yet.

Ok, Harry, I'll take a swag at it....

Was "C" perhaps one of the Carter family?
- the writer clearly was "local" to the area, with his livestock on close proximity to the CS lines.
- the writer was familiar enough to note the locations by colloquial names - "big forest"; and "upper Fairfax". (Was the latter term used in the same context as "upper and lower Shenandoah?")
- "C" knew Hunton from both pre-war and post-war contact. Was that from Hunton's time at Brentsville?

Still it seems to me "C" is blowing his own horn a bit here, mentioning that HE suggested to Hunton the posting of Loudoun Cav. And in the same breath, "C" was placed on staff as quartermaster. Sort of convenient there, eh? In the month previous to the battle, while Hunton's command was defending Goose Creek outside Leesburg, they had no employment to offer a quartermaster?
