Harry, Montgomery Clift was also the descendant of Col. William Clift, a famous (or notorious, depending on which way you shot) Southeast Tennessee Unionist who had sons serving on both sides. A. P. Stewart, who, as an old man lived in Chattanooga in accordance with his duties relative to Chickamauga Chattanooga NMP, lived with one of Clift’s sons after his wife died.

Oh gosh, don’t bring up the Shootist. That had to have one of the worst “blood” scenes I have ever seen in the movies. What did they use in that final shoot-out to show where people were shot? Ketchup!?

Actually, we used to play this exact game while we drove submarines on the mid-watch.

O.K., I’ve got one for you. In his many roles, how many times did John Wayne portray a Confederate soldier/former Confederate soldier, and how many times did he portray a Union soldier/former Union soldier?

Incidentally, I think a lot of people forget about his brief portrayal of Sherman in “How the West Was One.” If often slips my mind and I have a copy of the movie!

Now you know Montgomey Clift played “Matt” Garth in “Red River” (1948). The same name was used for a character played by Charlton Heston in “Midway” (1976), but of no relation. Henry Fonda played Admiral Nimitz in that World War II equivalent to “Gods and Generals.” It was a role he dusted off from 1965 when he played the Admiral in the movie “In Harm’s Way” along side John Wayne. Of course John Wayne was in “Red River” with Montgomery Clift in 1948…. Now I’ve talked myself in circles!

Do I get extra points because John Wayne played Gen. Sherman in “How the West Was Won.” ? “I plan to move Rousseau’s Brigade into those woods…”
