Harry, I think I have better than 3/4 of the regimentals published, so if you need a lookup, just let me know.

Robert,

I only got three hits on Rippetoe on the Daily Dispatch site, the others being a list of names from April and the report of the wounding of James Rippetoe of Sturdevant's Battery, June 20, 1864.

I've been meaning to start collecting the VRH series for units present at BR. Got to get around to that.

I can give you some info on the units listed above. Off the top of my head, I am familiar with many of the companies from the Shenandoah Valley listed above. The Rockingham Regiment was the 10th Va. Infantry. Most of the companies were from Rockingham County, but Co. K (Page Volunteers) was from Page County. Also, Gray Latham's Lynchburg battery - that was one of the batteries that I covered when writing for the Va. Regt. Hist. Series.

For some reason, I think you might have a hard time finding all of the citations regarding Rippetoe (I think there are maybe two articles in the RTD in which his name was misspelled).

I've got my trusty Amann out and am going to make a post identifying the regiments to which these companies belonged, and was having trouble with Rippetoe. I'll also look for the article on Rippetoe and Griffin's guns and post that if I find it.

Thanks.

Harry,

I'm pretty sure that if you keep looking in the Richmond Times Dispatch, you'll find more about Rippetoe's company being given credit for having taken Griffin's guns. Rippetoe's Company was Co. H (Page Grays), 33rd Virginia Infantry. Incidentally, Rippetoe was a Methodist minister. On another note, I'm pretty sure you won't find an account of it in the RTD, but Manassas was also Rippetoe's last battle. His conduct at the conclusion of the battle was rather unbecoming... more or less, he freaked out thinking his company was almost wiped out. It did take some heavy losses, but was far from being wiped out. His conduct didn't go over well with the men of his own company.

Hope your having a great Turkey day! - Robert
