Armstrong was one of three commanders who commanded soldiers in combat on both sides during the war. (No, unfortunately I don’t have the other two names out here in WA with me).

Armstrong of the 2nd Dragoons in Major Palmer’s report, would resign his commission in the US Army the next month after Manassas to enter the Confederate Army, where he rose to general in the Western Theatre, serving prominently in Forrest’s cavalry
